You and the Cost of Newborn Diapers

I've always thought that newborn diapers were more cost effective than the other sizes. (For those of you without children, every time you move up a size in diapers, you get fewer diapers in the package for the same price.) Then I saw how may newborn diapers we were actually going through and realized that the cost savings were negligible.

Our perfect little child was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through diapers like nobody's business. Actually, it wasn't just the newborn diapers - we were going through everything. This baby was 1/15 my size, and creating twice as much laundry.

I knew going in to this, theoretically, that having a baby was expensive. The costs I associated with having a baby were a little different, and further away, things like braces and university. I mean, just how much could this little bundle of joy cost? A whole lot, as it turns out.

I never thought it would happen, but I became that guy. I'm the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for other things as well, to help offset the added cost of our little bundle of joy. How did this happen? I now put all my coupons in an envelope so that I'm organized when I get to the store.

And I'm also making a list before I go to the grocery store; not only that, but I'm even using the flyers to make my list. While it does save us money, the real reason I do this is not to offset the cost of buying newborn diapers. No, it's more because of the fact that I've barely slept in three weeks and I'm liable to get to the store and forget what I went there for in the first place.

The only thing I can remember that we need is the newborn diapers. I know at least that we need those, even if I've forgotten everything else, so I'll just buy package after package of newborn diapers. So I've started making my list, and I wait anxiously for the flyers to be delivered each week. Then I go through them, very methodically, and make a list of what I need to get from each store so that I get all the best deals.

Still, despite the lack of sleep and shock over actual amount having a baby costs, I'm trying to commit every last moment to memory. Because I know that my beautiful baby won't fit into those newborn diapers for long, that soon I'll look back and wonder how she ever fit into something so small. I will hang on to each moment I have with my baby now, while my little child is small enough to still fit into those teeny-tiny newborn diapers.
